Federal Government to Meet ASUU on Monday to Address Strike Threat

The Federal Government is scheduled to meet with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other stakeholders on Monday to discuss a recent strike notice issued by the union.

Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman announced the meeting during a press briefing marking his one-year tenure. ASUU's 21-day strike notice highlights unresolved issues such as the revitalization of public universities, outstanding earned academic allowances, and withheld salaries.

Mamman indicated that invitations have been extended to ASUU and relevant organizations. He noted that some issues, such as the exit from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, have been addressed by the President, though delays have occurred due to bureaucratic processes.

The Minister expressed hope that the upcoming meeting will address and resolve the concerns raised by ASUU. He affirmed that President Bola Tinubu remains committed to ensuring academic stability and supporting measures to avoid academic disruptions.

Mamman emphasized the government's dedication to finding a lasting resolution to ASUU's demands, which have historically prompted strikes since 1981.
