Federal Polytechnic Bauchi Organizes Orientation for Prospective SIWES Students, Charges Them to Match Knowledge with Skills for Self-Reliance
The Federal Polytechnic Bauchi (FPTB) recently organized a 2024 SIWES Orientation for over 3,000 students preparing for the mandatory Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme.
The Federal Polytechnic Bauchi (FPTB) has emphasized the importance of aligning knowledge with practical skills as students prepare for the mandatory Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). The institution's Rector, Alhaji Sani Usman, delivered the message during the 2024 SIWES Orientation ceremony held at the 510 Hall of the Polytechnic, where over 3,000 students were in attendance.
Represented by the Deputy Rector, Dr. Dalhatu Sa’id, the Rector urged the prospective SIWES participants to view the program not just as a time away from the classroom, but as a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience that would contribute to their personal and professional growth. "SIWES is not just about spending time outside the school environment," Alhaji Usman remarked. "It is an essential platform for learning skills that translate into experience and contribute to national development."
The Rector further encouraged the students to be focused, dedicated, and punctual throughout their industrial attachment. He reminded them that their conduct during the program would reflect the values and reputation of the institution. “They are mirrors of our institution, and whatever they learn here should be a true reflection of their professional field," he added.
Dr. Hamisu Idi, the Director of SIWES at FPTB, highlighted the key procedures and requirements for the industrial attachment, which are set by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF). These include proper placement of students, grading, external supervision, and effective scheme management. He stressed that the Polytechnic would not tolerate truancy or poor performance by both students and their supervisors. "We are very serious about ensuring that students are properly placed and that their experiences are meaningful," Dr. Idi explained.
Malam Auwal Muhammad, the Area Manager of ITF’s Bauchi Office, also addressed the students, advising them to maintain professionalism, dress appropriately, and avoid operating machinery or tools without proper supervision. He stressed the importance of maturity and good behavior throughout the duration of their industrial attachment.
Following the orientation, the first batch of over 3,000 students will soon be deployed to their various places of primary assignments, where they will gain industry-specific experience and contribute to the workforce.
As FPTB continues to invest in the professional development of its students, the institution remains committed to preparing them for a successful future in their respective fields.
