A severe flood has submerged the Awo Hostel at the University of Ibadan (UI), damaging students' belongings, including foodstuffs, documents, and laptops. About 16 rooms on the underground floor were completely inundated, marking the first time student accommodations have been so severely affected, despite previous flooding incidents.

A devastating flood has submerged the Awo Hostel at the University of Ibadan (UI), causing significant damage to students’ belongings, including foodstuffs, important documents, and electronic devices. Affected students reported that about 16 rooms on the underground floor were completely inundated, leaving their properties floating in the water.

According to sources from the university, this incident marks the third flooding event in recent times, but it is the first instance where student accommodations have been so severely affected. One student expressed their distress, stating, “Peoples’ foodstuffs, documents, and properties, especially those who went to exams and are not around, were destroyed. Someone even left her laptop on the floor charging and she went out.”

Videos obtained by SaharaReporters depict the chaotic scene as students attempted to salvage their possessions, many of which were seen floating inside their rooms. The floodwaters overran not just the students’ living spaces but also invaded toilets, kitchens, and all entrances to the hostel.

A female student lamented the loss, revealing that the flood had destroyed everything in her room, including items in her cupboard and on her bed. She expressed her frustration at being unable to go out to buy food due to the overwhelming water.

The University of Ibadan community is now left to grapple with the aftermath of this flooding, as students face significant losses and disruption to their academic lives. Authorities are expected to respond to the crisis to assist affected students and mitigate future flooding risks.
