FUGA, RRIN to Strengthen Collaboration on Gum Arabic Research

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University Gashua (FUGA), Professor Yaqub Ahmed Geidam, has pledged to strengthen collaboration between the university and the Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria (RRIN), Gum Arabic Sub-Station, Gashua.
Geidam made the pledge when he led the university management and members of the FUGA Green Code Committee on a visit to the Gum Arabic Sub-Station, on Wednesday 12th August 2026.
He said the engagement was aimed at reciprocating an earlier visit by the institute and re-energising the existing relationship between the two institutions.
According to him, the FUGA’s Centre for Gum Arabic Research and the activities of the RRIN sub-station were closely related, stressing the need for both institutions to work together for mutual benefit and the advancement of research and development in Nigeria.
“We are here to give you confidence that this particular management will collaborate with a lot of energy with the station so that we benefit each other,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
He added that the university was also using the visit to formally invite the sub-station to the official launching of the FUGA Green Code, scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026.
According to him, the Green Code is an initiative designed to inculcate environmental sustainability in students, ensuring that graduates leave the university not only with academic certificates but also as ambassadors of environmental responsibility.
Geidam assured the institute that FUGA was willing to open its doors for further collaboration with the Gum Arabic Research Centre and the university at large, expressing appreciation for the warm reception accorded his delegation.
Responding, the Director/Officer-in-Charge of the RRIN Gum Arabic Sub-Station, Gashua, Dr I. F. Ojiekpon, expressed delight over the visit, describing it as an opportunity to further strengthen the longstanding relationship between the institute and the university.
Ojiekpon said RRIN and FUGA had complementary mandates, explaining that while the institute was primarily focused on research, the university combined teaching and research.
He said the common areas of interest had made collaboration between the two institutions necessary, particularly in training and capacity development, noting that the institute had over the years invited staff of the university to participate in its training programmes.
The institute subsequently made a presentation on the Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria, Gum Arabic Sub-Station, Gashua, at a glance, after which the Vice-Chancellor and his team were taken on a tour of the station’s nursery.
Accompanying the Vice-Chancellor were the Registrar, Dr Abubakar Mamuda; the Bursar, Mallam Muhammad Ahmed Ali; the Director of Works, Engr. Adamu Janga; the Chairman, FUGA Green Code Committee, Prof. James Ishaku Dantata; and other members of the committee.
