Dr. Racheal Akinbo, a distinguished scholar from the School of Computing at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), joined 200 of the world’s brightest young researchers at the 11th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF) in Germany. The event, which ran from September 21 to 28, 2024, brought together laureates in mathematics and computer science, offering a unique platform for these young scientists to interact with leaders in their fields.
The forum featured 25 laureates who have received the most prestigious awards in mathematics and computer science, and it provided opportunities for young researchers to engage in panels, workshops, discussions, and networking. Dr. Akinbo had the honor of presenting her research, which focuses on the classification of viral pneumonia using machine learning techniques to improve early disease detection.
Akinbo was selected for three prestigious categories: an all-expense-paid trip to the conference, a spot among the top 30 researchers presenting their work, and an exhibition of her intercultural digital artwork that merges computer science with mathematics.
Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Akinbo said, “I was proud to raise the Nigerian flag in Germany and represent FUTA, a top-ranking university in Nigeria. The connections made here will help me contribute even more to my university and nation.”
Dr. Akinbo expressed gratitude to her research supervisors and family for their support in her academic journey. The Heidelberg Laureate Forum has further solidified her place among the rising stars in the world of computer science and mathematics.
