FUTA Students Protest Against Tuition Fee Hike, Ground Academic Activities
Armed with placards bearing inscriptions like "Let our parents breathe," "We came to school to study, not to kill our parents," and "No to increment," the students voiced their displeasure over the new fees introduced by the management.
Protests erupted at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) on Monday as students expressed discontent over a recent increase in tuition fees. The students, gathering as early as 7 a.m., blocked the main gates of the institution and disrupted traffic on the Akure/Ilesha road.
Armed with placards bearing inscriptions like "Let our parents breathe," "We came to school to study, not to kill our parents," and "No to increment," the students voiced their displeasure over the new fees introduced by the management.
FUTA Student Union President, Comrade Olayemi Oluwasoromidayo, appealed to the school's management to revert to the old fees, citing the current economic challenges. Despite several meetings between the student union and the management, no resolution was reached, leading to the decision to stage a protest.
In response, the school management ordered the indefinite postponement of the resumption for the 2023–2024 academic session, directing all students to leave the campus within 24 hours. The institution clarified that while tuition remains free, adjustments in fees were made for consumables and municipal services due to economic realities.
