In a remarkable display of academic excellence, two students from the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) have claimed the top spots in the prestigious 2023 Ulefunta Festival Essay Writing Competition. The competition was organized under the auspices of the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi (Odundun II).

Following meticulous evaluation by a panel of esteemed judges, Oluwabukola Babalola and Alaba Abubakri, both hailing from the Department of Meteorology and Climate Science, emerged as the First and Second place winners, respectively. The essay competition bore the title, "Climate Change and Food Security: Roles of Rural Communities in Mitigation and Adaptation Measures."

The competition attracted a multitude of entries from talented writers across the region. To ensure the utmost quality, the organizers extended invitations to the crème de la crème of the entrants for an oral presentation of their essays. Astoundingly, of the six entries that made it to the final round, five were crafted by FUTA students. The evaluators acclaimed these essays for their outstanding insights into the pivotal roles of rural communities in combatting the adverse effects of climate change.

In recognition of their academic prowess, cash prizes were awarded to all the winners. Oluwabukola Babalola, who secured the coveted first place, was presented with additional cash rewards and an exclusive opportunity to undertake her National Youth Service Programme at the National Space Research and Development Agency (NARSDA). This extraordinary opportunity came courtesy of the Director General of NARSDA, Dr. Halilu Ahmad Shaba, who served as the Guest Lecturer at the 2023 Ulefunta Festival Lecture Series.
