Brigadier General YD Ahmed, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has called on Corps Members to make a significant impact in their host communities through meaningful projects and initiatives.
Addressing the 2024 Batch 'B' Stream Two Corps Members during their orientation at the Kaduna State Temporary Orientation Camp, located at Government College Kurmin-Mashi, General Ahmed emphasized the importance of the Community Development Service (CDS), one of the NYSC’s four cardinal programmes. He urged Corps Members to use this platform to leave lasting legacies that would enhance the living standards of the residents in their host communities.
"Community Development Service is designed to enable you to contribute positively to your host communities," General Ahmed stated. "Your projects should aim to improve the quality of life for the residents and foster meaningful change."
He also reminded the Corps Members to respect the cultural norms and traditions of their host communities and to avoid any actions that could cause friction with their hosts. Discipline, prudent use of social media, and active participation in all camp activities were highlighted as essential behaviors for a successful service year.
The Director General urged the Corps Members to adhere strictly to the security guidelines provided to them. "Ensure your safety both within and outside the camp," he advised. "We would never send you to areas with known security threats. Avoid night journeys, and if travel is necessary, always seek permission from NYSC officials and your place of primary assignment."
General Ahmed specifically warned against accepting free rides and stressed the importance of using designated motor parks for travel to avoid potential dangers.
In his update, the NYSC Kaduna State Coordinator, Mr. Hassan Hudu Taura, reported that the Corps Members have shown enthusiasm and active participation in all camp activities. He also noted that a total of 1,976 Corps Members were deployed to Kaduna State, with 639 coming from the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The emphasis on impactful community service and adherence to safety protocols underscores the NYSC's commitment to ensuring that Corps Members have a productive and secure service year while contributing positively to their host communities.
