Gov Agbu Kefas Urges Striking Taraba State University Lecturers to Resume Negotiations

Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has called on striking lecturers of the Taraba State University (TSU) to return to the negotiation table in the interest of the university community.

The appeal, made on Thursday, followed the declaration of an indefinite strike by the TSU chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), citing a breakdown in discussions over unresolved demands.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communications, Emmanuel Bello, Kefas emphasized the importance of dialogue as the most effective way to resolve conflicts.

Commending the lecturers for their previous cooperation, the governor urged patience, reiterating that meeting their demands and addressing the challenges within the university remain a priority for his administration.

“The lecturers are vital partners in shaping the future of our students, and I deeply value their contributions,” Kefas stated.

Highlighting ongoing efforts, Kefas noted that his government had taken steps to address critical issues, including slashing tuition fees for undergraduates by 50%, with the state government covering the balance. This move, according to the governor, has been widely applauded by students, parents, and stakeholders.

Additionally, Kefas revealed that substantial renovation works have been carried out in the university, particularly in the female hostels, and other parts of the institution to create a conducive learning environment.

To further address underlying challenges, a panel of inquiry chaired by former Speaker Prof. Josiah Kente was constituted to investigate issues affecting the university. The panel’s report has been submitted, and the government is working on implementing its recommendations.

Governor Kefas urged the striking lecturers to prioritize the welfare of the students and the broader academic community while the government continues to fulfill its commitments.

The governor reaffirmed his dedication to fostering a thriving educational environment, expressing optimism that the current impasse would be resolved amicably through continued dialogue.
