The 1994 alumni set of Government Secondary School (GSS) Garki, Area 10, has awarded scholarships to 20 indigent students. This generous initiative was part of their 30-year reunion, themed “Building Patriotic Leaders for Tomorrow,” which took place on Friday.
Mr. Jiboku Abayomi represented the alumni in presenting the scholarships on behalf of the alumni president, Mr. Festus Udoebor. This act of giving back underscores the group’s dedication to supporting educational opportunities for less privileged students in their community.
The event also featured a speech by Dr. Peter Olumuji, Chairman of the Planning Committee, who emphasized the significance of patriotism among the students. He conveyed that a genuine love for one’s country is essential for fostering national pride and unity. Dr. Olumuji encouraged the young attendees to believe in Nigeria’s potential and to actively contribute to the country’s progress.
He addressed the challenges to patriotism that students may face, including economic hardships, the negative impact of social media, and historical issues that can distort their perception of the nation. He urged the students to seek out good mentors and to be mindful of their actions, as these elements are crucial to their future roles in Nigeria's development.
In closing, Dr. Olumuji inspired the students to maintain a positive outlook, stating that true patriotism and effective leadership begin with self-awareness and a commitment to serving the greater good. The scholarships and the powerful message of patriotism reflect the alumni’s resolve to inspire the next generation of leaders to actively engage in Nigeria's growth and unity.
This event not only provided financial assistance to deserving students but also aimed to instill a sense of duty and responsibility toward nation-building among the youth.
