The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has undertaken an inspection tour of the ongoing 12-megawatt hybrid solar power project at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID).

The project, being executed under the Rural Electrification Agency’s (REA) Energising Education Programme (EEP), is part of a Federal Government initiative designed to enhance reliable power supply to universities and teaching hospitals nationwide.
The solar power facility, which serves both UNIMAID and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), is already in an advanced stage of completion. It has been operational for over a year, providing a steady power supply that has significantly reduced energy costs while improving institutional efficiency and service delivery.

The Minister, accompanied by Information Commissioners from APC-governed states, led the tour on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, as part of the quarterly meeting of the Progressive Governors’ Forum with Information Commissioners.
In his remarks, Mohammed Idris lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting what he described as a transformative and sustainable energy initiative. “This project has drastically reduced the university’s monthly energy expenses while enhancing research, teaching, and healthcare delivery. We appreciate President Tinubu for making this possible,” he stated.
He further commended the university’s management for its efforts in maintaining and safeguarding the facility.

Responding, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAID, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the intervention. He noted that the solar project has greatly improved the institution’s academic, research, and medical operations. He also thanked the Minister for his visit and continued support in ensuring the sustainability of the project.
