Kogi State University VC Defends 170 JAMB Cut-Off Score for Admissions

The Vice Chancellor of Kogi State University, Kabba, has firmly defended the decision to set the minimum cut-off mark for admission at 170, in contrast to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) benchmark of 140. Prof. Eniola, addressing the media during the university's end-of-year program, emphasized that lowering the cut-off would compromise the institution's academic standards.

Prof. Eniola stated, “Reducing the cut-off mark below 170 does not reflect well on the university. I will not yield to those calling for a lower admission score.” He acknowledged the institution's need to attract students but maintained that maintaining high standards is crucial for producing quality education.

The Vice Chancellor responded to criticism regarding the university’s admission policies, asserting that the institution is not merely focused on generating revenue. “Our aim is to produce a standard of education we can be proud of. Setting 170 as our admission benchmark is not too high,” he explained.

Prof. Eniola also pointed out that many reputable institutions do not admit students with scores below 200, despite JAMB's minimum of 140. He encouraged prospective students who did not meet the 170 score to consider enrolling in 'A' level courses, assuring them that such students would receive priority in the subsequent admission cycle.
