The Department of Theatre and Film Arts at Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, successfully hosted the 38th International Conference and 39th Annual General Meeting of the Society of Nigerian Theatre Artists (SONTA) on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

The Department of Theatre and Film Arts at Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, successfully hosted the 38th International Conference and 39th Annual General Meeting of the Society of Nigerian Theatre Artists (SONTA) on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

Held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, the event attracted scholars, creative practitioners, choreographers, students, and dignitaries from across Nigeria and internationally, fostering a dynamic platform for discussions on the evolution of performance arts.

Centered on the theme “Technology, Intercultural Dialogue and the Future of the Performing Arts,” the conference delved into how culture, creativity, and digital innovation are reshaping contemporary and future performance practices. Participants explored the role of technology in bridging cultural divides and enhancing artistic expression, making it a timely gathering amid rapid advancements in digital tools.

 

In her opening remarks, LASU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello welcomed attendees, describing the university as “the most preferred, most digitally advanced, and best state university in Nigeria.” She emphasized the theme's relevance, calling on delegates to engage deeply, collaborate generously, and envision boldly. “The future of the performing arts must be shaped with creativity, courage, and compassion,” she stated, before officially declaring the conference open. The event was chaired by Chief Kayode Aderinokun, Chairman of Sparkrod Nigeria Ltd.

Prof. Tunji Afeez, Dean of the School of Creativity, Culture and Tourism Studies, described the conference as an essential space for knowledge exchange. SONTA President Prof. Gowon Ama Doki highlighted Nigeria's creative industry's potential to tackle socio-cultural challenges, underscoring the gathering's importance for national development.

 

The keynote address, titled “Citizen-Performer and the Present Future: Technology and Transformation in Performing Arts,” was delivered by renowned choreographer and scholar Prof. Rasaki Ojo Bakare. He discussed the impacts of artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, and blockchain on redefining the performing arts, urging a proactive embrace of these technologies. In the lead paper “Reimagining the Stage: Culture, Code, and Connection in the Age of Digital Convergence,” filmmaker and Zuri24 Media founder Mr. Femi Odugbemi argued that technology amplifies rather than erases culture. He advocated for intentional use of digital tools to keep the arts inclusive, innovative, and rooted in cultural heritage.

SONTA also honored distinguished contributors with fellowships and awards. Prof. Olatunji-Bello received a Distinguished Leadership Award for her support of the arts. Other recipients included Mr. Segun Adefila, Dr. Hafiz Oyetoro, Mr. Theo Lawson, Mr. Joseph Sampson Edgar, Mr. Emmanuel Kalu Uduma, Dr. Bankole Allibay, Hon. Ife Salako, Ms. Bola Stephen Atitebi, and Comrade Nurudeen Mudashiru Eniafe, recognizing their pivotal roles in advancing Nigerian theatre and performance.

 

Prior to the main sessions, SONTA executives visited the Vice-Chancellor to express gratitude for her ongoing support. The conference schedule extends through the week, featuring plenary sessions, live performances, excursions to Badagry heritage sites, and a funfair at Suntan Beach, with formal conclusion on Saturday, September 6, 2025. This event not only celebrated artistic innovation but also positioned LASU as a leader in fostering intercultural dialogue through the performing arts.
