LASU Lecturer Achieves Milestone as UNILAG's Best PhD Graduate

The upcoming 54th convocation ceremony at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) is set to be a momentous occasion, featuring a diverse array of achievements and recognitions. Among the highlights is the outstanding accomplishment of Dr. Aminat Olawunmi Ige, a Mathematics lecturer at Lagos State University (LASU), who has been named the overall best PhD graduate. The ceremony will witness the graduation of 17,464 students, with notable achievements such as 340 First Class honorees and international students supported by a World Bank grant.

In a remarkable feat, a lecturer from Lagos State University (LASU), Dr. Aminat Olawunmi Ige, emerged as the overall best PhD graduate at the upcoming 54th convocation ceremony of the University of Lagos (UNILAG). The ceremony is set to witness the graduation of 17,464 students, with 10,578 receiving first degrees and 6,886 obtaining postgraduate diplomas and degrees.

UNILAG's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, shared the impressive statistics during a press briefing. Among the first degree holders, 340 achieved First Class honors, with David Oluwatomiwa Akanmu from the Faculty of Engineering securing a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.00. Ibrahim Abiodun Quadri, from the Faculty of Management Sciences, emerged as the best graduating student in the Humanities with a CGPA of 4.94.

For the postgraduate degrees, 465 students will graduate with postgraduate diplomas, while 6,266 will receive Master's degrees, including 31 international students supported by a World Bank grant. Dr. Aminat Olawunmi Ige, a Mathematics lecturer at LASU, received the overall best PhD Thesis award for her work in Mathematics, while Issa Akanji Adedokun secured the best PhD in the Humanities for Private and Property Law.

UNILAG plans to confer honorary doctorate degrees on three distinguished personalities during the convocation ceremony. Professor Phyllis Kanki, a professor of Immunology at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health, and Professor Attahiru Muhammadu Jega, a Professor of Political Science known for revolutionizing Nigeria's electoral process, are among the honorees.

The convocation lecture, titled "Decolonizing African Higher Education for Transformational Development," will be delivered by Professor Toyin Falola. The ceremony stands as a testament to the academic excellence and diverse achievements within the UNILAG community, celebrating the accomplishments of both graduates and influential contributors to various fields.
