LASU Pioneer E-Voting System Sets National Precedent as 37th LASUSU Elections Conclude Successfully

The 37th Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU) general election for the 2026/2027 Academic Session, have been successfully conducted across all campuses of the University, with over 6,500 students participating electronically to elect new leaders for the students’ body in a process widely praised for its transparency, innovation, and credibility. 

The election, conducted through an electronic voting (e-voting) system, demonstrated the power of synergy between the university management and the students. The seamless exercise reflected the visionary leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi OLATUNJI-BELLO, mni, NPOM; the technological innovation of the Directorate of Information and Communication Technology (DICT), coordinated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Administration), Professor Oluwatoyin ENIKUOMEHIN, and the administrative coordination of the Acting Dean, Students' Affairs Division, Dr Abiodun FATAI-ABATAN, alongside his team.

The successful conduct of the election also benefitted from the contributions of other critical stakeholders, including the University Security Unit, the Centre for Information and Public Relations, and the Independent Electoral Committee (IEC) of LASUSU led by Honourable Theresa Tobiloba GABRIEL. Their collective efforts culminated in an electoral process adjudged by many stakeholders as one of the freest, fairest, and most technologically advanced in the recent history of the institution.

At the end of the exercise, Rufai Akanni OBIPEHIN emerged as the 37th President of Lagos State University Students' Union (LASUSU), while Hon. Abdulrahman Temidayo IMAM emerged as the 37th Speaker of the Students Parliamentary Council (SPC).

By the time the election concluded at about 7:00 p.m. on Monday, 25th May 2026, with the official announcement of results, there was palpable excitement across the University community.

Speaking after the exercise, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Administration), Professor Oluwatoyin ENIKUOMEHIN, commended the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi OLATUNJI-BELLO, mni, NPOM, for providing the students with a platform to freely and seamlessly elect their leaders through technology-driven processes. He equally praised members of staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the smooth conduct of the election.

Professor Enikuomehin particularly highlighted the uniqueness and effectiveness of the electronic voting (e-voting) system deployed for the exercise, noting that the success recorded by LASU demonstrates that the model can be replicated for larger electoral processes in Nigeria.

He further commended the student-led Independent Electoral Committee (IEC) for its professionalism, organisational competence, and commitment to delivering a credible election to their fellow students.

Beyond its technological innovation, the 37th LASUSU general election also recorded a historic milestone with the emergence of Honourable Theresa Tobiloba GABRIEL as the first female Chairperson of the Lagos State University Students' Union Independent Electoral Committee (LASUSUIEC) in the history of the institution.

The electoral process, which commenced on Saturday, 23rd May 2026 with the Students’ Parliamentary Council elections concluded on Tuesday, 26th May 2026, with the conduct of the College, School, Faculty, and Departmental elections.
