John Oladapo Obafunwa, the former Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU) and a renowned forensic pathologist, has been appointed as the new director-general of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR).

The announcement was made by Nigeria’s presidency on Monday.

Obafunwa’s tenure as LASU’s Vice Chancellor between 2011 and 2015 was marked by controversy. Despite being tagged as the “worst” VC in the university’s history, his expertise in forensics and pathology remains unquestioned.

During his term, LASU faced protests from staff and students who criticized his administration for issues such as delayed certificates and official malfeasance. Students often completed examinations without receiving their results, and a backlog of 70,500 certificates remained unissued to graduates even years after leaving the university. Lecturers struggled to address lingering salary concerns, and various associations rallied against Obafunwa’s leadership.

In contrast to his time as VC, Obafunwa is revered for his expertise in forensics and pathology. Having served as the provost of the Lagos State University College of Medicine and as Lagos State’s leading forensic pathologist, he is considered one of Nigeria’s premier medical professionals.

Obafunwa’s appointment as the new director-general of NIMR follows the expiration of Babatunde Salako’s tenure.
