LASUED Owsd Branch Marks International Day Of Friendship, Inaugurates New Executives And Honours Outstanding Members

Lagos State University of Education, LASUED, through its Branch of the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World, OWSD, on Thursday, 30th July, 2026, commemorated the 2026 International Day of Friendship with a strong emphasis on unity, collaboration, and inclusiveness.

The event, themed "Building Bridges Through Unity," also featured the inauguration of newly elected executives and an award ceremony to recognise outstanding contributions by members. Held at the College of Management Sciences Education, COMSED, Boardroom, the programme brought together academic leaders, staff, and members of the university community in celebration of friendship, leadership, and shared purpose.

In her address, the Director of the Directorate of Entrepreneurship and Skills Development, DESD, and Vice-Chairperson of the OWSD LASUED Branch, Professor Olaleye Bolanle, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, underscored the significance of OWSD in promoting collaboration, empowering women in science, and strengthening professional networks within and beyond the University. She noted that the organisation continues to provide women in science with opportunities for professional growth and global relevance. She also congratulated the awardees, encouraging them to sustain their pursuit of excellence while promoting peace, unity, and innovation in their respective fields.

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Oshodi Odunola Oriyomi highlighted the vital roles of mentorship, networking, and advocacy in empowering women in science and dismantling barriers that hinder their advancement. She urged members to create more opportunities for young girls to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, STEM, without limitations. According to her, recognising excellence in science, education, and community service not only celebrates individual achievements but also inspires others to make meaningful contributions to society. She further called for stronger partnerships, inclusive leadership, and sustained investment in research and innovation as critical drivers of sustainable development.

Goodwill messages were delivered by the Dean of the College of Management Sciences Education, COMSED, Professor Safurat Ajani, Dr Adesoyin Raji, and Dr Olufunmilola Yekini, who commended the newly elected executives for their commitment to leadership, innovation, and mentorship within the academic community. They also charged them to uphold the ideals of the organisation and continue fostering excellence among women in science.

A major highlight of the event was the presentation of Certificates of Return to the newly elected executives, alongside the conferment of awards on deserving members in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the organisation and the advancement of science. The presentation was led by Dr Olisama Victoria.

Congratulating both the award recipients and the newly inaugurated executives, Professor Oshodi urged them to lead with integrity, humility, and vision while remaining committed to advancing the objectives of OWSD and contributing meaningfully to society.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Professor Akinyemi Abosede, while the closing prayer was offered by Professor Aboluwarin.
