MCIU Celebrates Academic Accomplishments on her 5th Convocation Ceremony

On the 6th of September, 2023, at the Power of Faith Building, Michael and Cecilia Ibru University, a significant event took place. It was a glorious end to a week-long series of events that went beyond the celebration of academic accomplishments, Myschoolnews gathered.

The festivities began with a medical outreach program organised by the Michael and Cecilia Foundation to serve the Agbarha-Otor Community. Dedicated medical professionals provided free healthcare, bridging not just medical gaps but forging stronger bonds between the university and its neighbours.

The university alumni also returned to campus to visit with the graduating class, reminiscing and sharing their struggles and triumphs. Their stories, like torches in the dark, illuminated the path for graduating students. Education, they said, was not just about books but about gaining the resilience to navigate life’s twists and turns.

In the spirit of camaraderie, a football match gathered students and staff. Goals were scored, and saves were made. But beyond that, it was a vivid demonstration of the bonds within the university community. Laughter, cheers, and friendly banter in the stands created an atmosphere of unity, reinforcing the idea that education isn’t confined to classrooms but extends to forging lifelong friendships.

With the arrival of the Convocation Day, the stage was set for a grand finale.

Dr Mrs Cecilia Ibru OFR, the co-founder, graced the occasion with a warm and insightful welcome address. Her words reiterated the university’s profound mission – to provide quality education while nurturing leaders who embody its values and principles.

Her speech went further, delving into the transformative power of technology, specifically artificial intelligence (AI). She spoke of the AI evolution, from science fiction to an integral part of our lives, even citing ChatGPT as an example. AI, she said, was not a threat but a tool to empower educators and a virtual mentor for personalized learning.

The Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Peter G. Hugbo, while delivering his address, delved deep into the importance of character and integrity in education and leadership. Prof. Hugbo’s message was clear – knowledge alone isn’t enough; character matters. His speech was a stirring call to action, urging educators and society to recognize the significance of character and integrity.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyinka Fuwape FNIP, stepped forward with a warm welcome and expressions of gratitude. She reminded everyone of the university’s commitment to honouring its founder and providing transformative education. Her address emphasized that Michael and Cecilia Ibru University was not just a place of learning but a community deeply rooted in its values.

The keynote speaker, Prof. Bart Nnaji, illuminated the future with his speech. His presentation was a powerful call to embrace artificial intelligence, recognizing its transformative potential. He praised Dr Mrs. Cecilia Ibru’s contributions and advocated for innovation.

For the conferment of the Bachelor’s degree, the graduates were presented to the Chancellor who bestowed their honour on them and shook hands with the top graduates. Leading the graduating class of 2023 as the overall best-graduating student was Emmanuel Aregbor who graduated with a First Class from the Computer Science department.

Three renowned Nigerians were awarded honourary doctorate degrees for their contributions to the development of education, science and technology in their chosen fields. In what has been dubbed a year for engineers, Prof. Bart Nnaji, Engr. Mathew Edevbie, and Engr. Johnny Esike were each honoured with the esteemed Doctor of Science Honoris Causa award. A testament to their exceptional socio-economic influence.

The Convocation Ceremony and Memorial Lecture illustrated the power of education, values, and community engagement. They were a testament to the enduring legacy of Olorogun Dr Michael C.O. Ibru and the visionary leadership of Dr Cecilia Ibru, OFR.
