In a stern warning, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has threatened to "completely shut down" the Medical College of Abia State University Uturu (ABSU) if it fails to pass accreditation next week. The Registrar of the Council, Dr T.A.B Sanusi, issued the ultimatum during the maiden induction of medical doctors at Gregory University Uturu (GUU).
The ABSU Medical College lost accreditation in early 2022 due to the inactivity of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital Aba (ABSUTH), caused by prolonged strikes by doctors owed over 24 months. Dr Sanusi emphasized that the upcoming accreditation would be a decisive moment for the college's future.

He highlighted the importance of stringent accreditation measures in ensuring the quality of medical education and the competency of future doctors.
Expressing concern over the delay in accreditation, Dr Sanusi emphasized the significance of MDCN's strict standards to guarantee the safety of patients and the competence of medical practitioners. He revealed that the Council had over 117 petitions against medical doctors, with an additional 120 awaiting trial.

The MDCN Registrar cautioned doctors on housemanship against participating in strikes, emphasizing that they are not members of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) by Council policy. He outlined the consequences of violating housemanship protocols, stressing the importance of providing uninterrupted care to patients.
While congratulating the inductees, Dr Sanusi urged them to uphold the ethics of the medical profession and commended Gregory University Uturu for its efforts in establishing and running a medical school.

In a separate development, the Nigerian Army expresses concern over the proliferation of fake online recruitment information, particularly regarding the Nigerian Army Direct Short Service (DSS) Recruitment Portal for the year 2023. The Army has launched Operation Golden Dawn 3 in Abia to address the situation and maintain the integrity of its recruitment processes.
