Med Mind Triumphs at UNN Hackathon with Innovative Medical Chatbot: A Technological Breakthrough in Bioprocess Engineering

In a remarkable display of technological prowess, Nigerian AI startup, Med Mind, secured the top spot at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) Bioprocess Engineering Machine Learning Interoperable Hackathon. The event witnessed the emergence of Med Mind's groundbreaking medical chatbot, designed to provide users with treatment recommendations, drug interactions, disease predictions, and optimized drug dosages.

Med Mind, founded in 2023 by Ernest Akubueze and Samuel Onwuka, both students with expertise in Machine Learning and Data Science, aims to address the critical need for accessible and up-to-date health information in Nigeria and Africa. Speaking to Technext, Akubueze highlighted the significance of leveraging AI solutions to bridge the healthcare information gap.

The hackathon, focused on Bioprocess Engineering, required participants to develop solutions utilizing Machine Learning models, emphasizing interoperability. Med Mind strategically entered the competition through the health and medical sector, aligning with their expertise in Bioprocess Engineering.

Med Mind's winning solution, a user-friendly chatbot, offers a range of features, including treatment recommendations, drug-to-drug interaction insights, disease predictions, and drug dosage optimization. The team implemented the model using Langchain as their framework, incorporating OpenAI and Wolfram Alpha as large language models, and utilizing Wikipedia and DuckDuckGo for general prompt responses.

Ernest Akubueze expressed his excitement about the win, emphasizing its significance as a springboard for Med Mind's future endeavors. The victory has motivated the team to refine their product, expand their team, and provide exceptional services to the market.

Currently at the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) stage, Med Mind's chatbot project plans to implement additional features such as access to real-time medical professionals in critical cases, geolocation of hospitals/pharmacies/clinics, and more. Acknowledging the need for funding to realize these plans, the team is open to early-stage investors, venture capitalists, and business mentors who can contribute to the startup's growth and success.

As Med Mind strives to bring its innovative healthcare solution to users across Africa and the world, the team is focused on obtaining the necessary licenses, refining the user interface, and building a dedicated team to support various aspects of the project. The startup anticipates launching the product for user consumption in the near future, with the ultimate goal of making a significant impact on healthcare accessibility and information dissemination.
