Miva Open University Unveils First 200 Beneficiaries of N1bn Scholarship Scheme

Miva Open University has announced the first batch of beneficiaries of the Gbemisola Olowolafe Miva Scholarship, with 200 students selected to receive financial support for their undergraduate education.

The scholarship programme, launched in partnership with the Tunji Olowolafe Foundation, is designed to expand access to quality higher education and create opportunities for talented students across Nigeria, regardless of their financial circumstances.

The initiative forms part of a N1 billion, five-year commitment aimed at supporting 1,000 students who demonstrate strong academic potential but require financial assistance to pursue their studies.

According to the organizers, the scholarship attracted significant interest nationwide, with more than 1,700 applications submitted in March. Following a rigorous screening process, 200 students emerged as the first beneficiaries based on their academic achievements, financial need, and clearly defined educational aspirations.

The selection process was guided by transparent criteria, merit-based assessments, and a structured accountability framework to ensure fairness and credibility. Successful applicants were formally notified of their selection through email communications.

Speaking on the development, Vice-Chancellor of Miva Open University, Professor Tayo Arulogun, described the scholarship award as a major milestone in the institution's mission to make quality education accessible to more Nigerians.

“This initiative ensures that capable students are not limited by financial barriers,” Arulogun said.

Founder of the Tunji Olowolafe Foundation, Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, also emphasised the programme's focus on long-term human capital development, noting that investing in education remains one of the most effective ways to empower future generations.

Both organizations congratulated the successful beneficiaries and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting them throughout their academic journey.

The scholarship programme will continue in phases as it works toward its target of supporting 1,000 students over the next five years. Organisers say the partnership will play a crucial role in equipping young Nigerians with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities needed to contribute meaningfully to national development.
