The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has disbursed ₦84.2 billion to students across the country, according to Rep. Gboyega Isiaka. As of September 2024, 258,943 students have applied for institutional and upkeep loans under the initiative aimed at improving access to higher education.
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has disbursed a total of ₦84.2 billion to support students across the country, according to the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Polytechnic and Higher Technical Education, Mr. Gboyega Isiaka.
Speaking at the 36th annual conference of the Federal Government College, Maiduguri Old Students Association, held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Isiaka revealed that the amount disbursed includes ₦27.5 billion for institutional loans and ₦56.7 billion for upkeep loans as of September 2024.
He noted that the Student Loan Access to Higher Education Act, passed earlier this year, has enabled the NELFUND initiative, helping to ensure that deserving students can access quality education without financial hindrance.
“As of the end of September, NELFUND has made significant strides under President Bola Tinubu's administration,” Isiaka stated. “A total of 351,317 students have registered on the NELFUND portal, out of which 258,943 have applied for either institutional or upkeep loans, or both.”
Isiaka emphasized the importance of education in national development and the critical role financial aid plays in empowering the next generation of Nigerians. He encouraged more students to take advantage of the opportunities offered by NELFUND.
