Nigerian Lady whose mother was abandoned after father’s death wins Mastercard scholarship to UK, overcomes tough struggle

Solace Ojotule, a resilient Nigerian lady, has triumphed over challenging circumstances to earn a Mastercard Scholarship for her studies in the United Kingdom. Ojotule, who shared her inspiring journey on LinkedIn, recounted the hardships she faced after her father's death when she was just four years old.
The paternal family's decision to seize her father's properties due to the absence of a male heir left Ojotule, along with her mother and four sisters, in a dire situation. Despite financial struggles, her mother persevered to pay for their primary education. Ojotule, however, faced a hurdle in continuing to high school due to funding constraints.
In 2006, a turning point came when the government in her state provided free education for junior high school students. This opportunity allowed her to enroll in high school, and she successfully graduated. Ojotule furthered her education at Kogi State University, where she studied Theater Arts. Throughout her university years, she worked tirelessly, even resorting to hawking, to gather funds for her tuition fees.
After obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in Theater Arts, Ojotule faced numerous scholarship rejections. However, her persistence paid off when she was awarded a fully-funded Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme at the University of Edinburgh, one of the top-ranking universities globally.

Expressing her joy, she stated, "I arrived in the UK and I still can’t believe it’s this ‘ordinary’ girl... I’m happy to prove that GIRLS can do it. Our dreams are valid."
Ojotule acknowledged her mother's strength and resilience throughout their challenging journey. She emphasized that her achievement is not just for herself but also for her mother and all widows who have faced adversity to provide the best for their children.
As of 2022, Ojotule is on track to complete her Master's in Africa and International Development at the University of Edinburgh, marking a remarkable accomplishment in her pursuit of education against all odds.
