In a move aimed at bolstering research excellence and innovation, the Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), Prof. M.K. Yakubu, inaugurated an 11-member NILEST Research Board. The inauguration took place yesterday at the institute's headquarters, with members representing various directorates, and the DG himself serving as Chairman while the Registrar acts as the Secretary, in accordance with provisions laid out in the NILEST Act 2023.

The primary mandate of the newly established board is to oversee and coordinate all research activities across the institute. This initiative marks a significant step forward in consolidating NILEST's position as a leading research institution in leather and related fields.

Upon assuming office, Prof. M.K. Yakubu initiated research grants aimed at motivating staff to engage in cutting-edge research endeavors. This proactive measure has resulted in the establishment of over 23 fully funded research teams at NILEST. Currently, 17 of these projects have been successfully completed and are on the verge of being patented, while the remaining 6 are ongoing, poised to contribute further to the institute's research portfolio.

During the inauguration ceremony, the Director General emphasized the importance of professionalism and impartiality in executing their responsibilities. He urged the board members to uphold high standards of integrity and diligence, ensuring that all research activities at NILEST contribute significantly to national development and global knowledge advancement in leather technology.
