Northwest University Kano Appoints Chairmen for Two Key Committees and Signs MoU for Multipurpose Hostel Project
In a decisive move to strengthen student welfare and improve campus life, the Vice-Chancellor of Northwest University Kano, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, on Monday, 11th August 2025, presided over the appointment of chairmen for two strategic committees at the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, and later led the University Management in signing a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HALAL ECO-AFRICA for the construction of a multipurpose hostel on the Main Campus.
The first appointment saw Dr. Bilal Abdullahi Shariff, Director of Health Services, named Chairman of the Sensitization on Student’s Contributory Health Programme (SCHEP) Implementation Committee. The committee is tasked with ensuring that every student in the University enjoys access to affordable, high-quality healthcare services, maintaining high standards of healthcare delivery, securing funds for healthcare facility engagement, and addressing specific student health needs through regular health education. The committee will also ensure both the University and the Kano State Contributory Health Management Agency (KSCHMA) discharge their responsibilities effectively.
The membership of the SCHEP Implementation Committee includes:

* Abdurrahman Yanusa – Head, Legal Unit (Member)
* Abdussalam Mahmud – SUG President (Member)

* Shamsuddeen Hassan – ICT Representative, KSCHMA (Member)
* Secretary to be selected from among members.
The second appointment was Prof. Muhammad Bilyaminu Ado, Director of Quality Assurance, as Chairman of the Task Force on Combating the Use of Illicit Substances. This task force has been constituted as a proactive measure to safeguard the health, safety, and academic focus of students. Its mandate includes assessing the campus environment to prevent any potential introduction or circulation of illicit substances, raising awareness on the dangers of drug abuse, and establishing robust monitoring systems. It will also identify and address early warning signs, recommend preventive strategies, and ensure alignment with university regulations and national laws. The task force will further integrate insights from the University’s security vulnerability report into its preventive framework.

Later in the day, at the Council Chamber of the Main Campus, Professor Kurawa led the University Management in signing a Memorandum of Understanding with HALAL ECO-AFRICA for the construction of a state-of-the-art multipurpose hostel. The delegation from HALAL ECO-AFRICA was headed by its Founder and CEO, Hajiya Aminatu Ibrahim Musa, accompanied by staff from the organization, including Mallam Yakubu Dan Mari, who made a comprehensive presentation of the project to the University Management.
The planned multipurpose hostel will not only provide modern accommodation for students but will also house a Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, indoor games courts for sports and recreation, and other student support facilities aimed at promoting both academic and extracurricular engagement.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Professor Kurawa described the partnership as a “timely intervention” for one of the fastest-growing University in Northern Nigeria. “Even though we have multiple hostel projects ongoing, the demand for quality student accommodation will always remain high. A project of this nature, which also integrates entrepreneurship and recreational facilities, is exactly what our students need,” he remarked.
In her response, Hajiya Aminatu Ibrahim Musa pledged HALAL ECO-AFRICA’s commitment to delivering a facility that meets world-class standards and enhances the student experience at Northwest University Kano.
