NSUK Moves to Establish Medical Laboratory Science Programme, Seeks MLSCN Partnership

Nasarawa State University Keffi has intensified efforts to expand its academic portfolio in the health sciences following a strategic engagement with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), aimed at securing approval for the establishment of a Medical Laboratory Science programme.

The Vice-Chancellor, Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, led a high-level management delegation on a courtesy visit to the Council, describing the initiative as a deliberate move to strengthen the university’s contribution to healthcare education and address the national shortage of trained laboratory professionals.

The engagement focused on regulatory alignment, programme development standards, and institutional readiness for the proposed course. The Vice-Chancellor highlighted existing academic infrastructure and human capacity within Nasarawa State University Keffi, expressing confidence in the university’s ability to meet the requirements for a successful rollout.

She emphasized that the proposed programme forms part of a broader institutional strategy to deepen scientific training, enhance research output, and respond to emerging healthcare workforce needs in Nigeria.

In response, the Acting Registrar/CEO of MLSCN, Donald Ibe Ofili, welcomed the delegation and commended the university’s proactive approach. He reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to supporting credible institutions in developing compliant and high-quality training programmes aligned with national standards.

He further advised the university to formally indicate readiness for programme commencement once all regulatory benchmarks are met, assuring that adherence to established guidelines would facilitate a smooth approval and implementation process.

The visit signals a strategic expansion drive by Nasarawa State University Keffi into critical health science disciplines, reinforcing its positioning as an institution focused on responsive academic development and workforce relevance in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
