NUC Begins Verification of Four New Programmes at FUTA

National Universities Commission (NUC) has commenced a resource verification exercise at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State, to assess the institution’s readiness to introduce four proposed academic programmes.

The exercise, held on Monday, August 17, 2026, covered programmes proposed by the School of Architecture, School of Science and Technology Education, and School of Electrical Systems Engineering.

The proposed programmes are **Landscape Architecture, Interior Architecture Design, Industrial and Technology Education, and Information and Communication Engineering**.

The verification was carried out as part of the NUC’s regulatory and quality assurance responsibilities. The team assessed FUTA’s available academic manpower, lecture rooms, laboratories, specialised equipment, library resources, office spaces and other facilities required to run the programmes effectively.

Speaking for the NUC team, Professor Isah Danladi said the exercise was aimed at determining whether the proposed programmes met the Commission’s requirements before approval could be granted.

He stressed that qualified academic staff and adequate teaching and learning facilities were essential to maintaining quality, particularly in specialised programmes requiring studios, laboratories and technical infrastructure.

The team subsequently inspected relevant facilities and held discussions with officials overseeing the proposed programmes.

The proposed courses are expected to expand opportunities in areas linked to the built environment, technical education and Nigeria’s growing technology sector.

However, the verification exercise does not amount to final approval. The NUC will consider its findings and recommendations before deciding on the commencement of the programmes.

Successful approval would enable FUTA to expand its academic offerings and provide students with programmes aligned with emerging technological, professional and labour-market needs.
