A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Adamawa State has been diagnosed with Lassa fever, according to the state's Ministry of Health and Human Services.

The ministry confirmed the infection in a statement signed by Pharm Zirra Mathias Bubanani, the Permanent Secretary. The statement revealed that the affected Corps member, stationed at the Damare Orientation Camp, tested positive for the disease after undergoing testing at the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) in Abuja.

Health workers at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola, suspected the Corps member of exhibiting symptoms similar to those of Lassa fever, prompting the investigation and subsequent confirmation of the infection.

While addressing public concerns, the ministry emphasized the importance of personal hygiene and urged individuals to take precautionary measures. It also highlighted the efforts of the Governor Umaru Fintiri-led administration in collaborating with state health facilities, agencies, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to prevent the spread of the disease.

As part of the preventive measures, the ministry advised the public to maintain good hygiene practices, avoid unnecessary contact, properly store leftover food to prevent rat infestation, and promptly report suspected cases of Lassa fever to health officers in their communities.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Felix Bilishan Tangwami, is scheduled to provide further updates during a press briefing on Monday.
