This move marks a significant transition from the previous structure where Mass Communication was offered as a single department since the establishment of the university in 1992.

The decision to unbundle Mass Communication departments aligns with the directive from the National Universities Commission (NUC) starting from 2021. Several other universities across Nigeria, including Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo; Imo State University (IMSU); Lagos State University (LASU); University of Uyo; Bayero University Kano (BUK); and Nasarawa State University, Keffi, have also elevated their Mass Communication departments to faculties.
