A group of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members have called on the commission to consider implementing a transport fare subsidy for Corps members to alleviate the impact of rising transport costs.

These Corps members expressed their concerns about the challenges they face in raising funds for camp admission and transportation expenses, particularly from distant regions of the country to Osun State, amidst the significant increase in transport fares.

They highlighted the financial burden placed on their families and guardians, citing examples of individuals who had to rely on the support of (NYSC) to cover transportation costs.

Alimat Goni, a Corps member from Borno State, shared her experience of spending N42,000 on transportation to Osun State, revealing the financial strain it placed on her family. She recounted the story of her friend, Salamat, who was unable to afford the trip to Edo State due to financial constraints.

Chukwudi Emmanuel from Ebonyi State echoed similar sentiments, disclosing that he spent N34,000 on transportation to Osun State. He emphasized the need for a transport subsidy to incentivize Corps members to accept postings to any state and to alleviate the financial burden associated with relocation.

In response to these pleas, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, advocated for a reform of the NYSC, calling for a Public-Private Partnership model to address the sustainability of the scheme. He emphasized the importance of the NYSC in fostering patriotism among Nigerian youth and urged for its restructuring to accommodate private sector involvement.
