OAU Wins EU Erasmus Grant to Establish Master’s Program in Smart Farming and IoT
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has emerged as a key beneficiary of the prestigious 2025 EU-Grant (Erasmus) for the establishment of a specialized Master of Science degree program in Smart Farming and IoT in Agriculture (MESITA).
The initiative, officially coded as ERASMUS-EDU-2025-CBHE-STRAND-2, is part of a high-level international consortium comprising four Nigerian universities, three European institutions, and a digital funding ecosystem.
Kick-started in November 2025 in Abuja, the MESITA project aims to modernize the agricultural landscape in Nigeria by integrating cutting-edge technologies into academic curricula. The program focuses on:
Advanced Skillsets: Equipping graduates with expertise in Embedded Systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Precision Agriculture.
Sustainability: Promoting climate-friendly farming practices to address food security and environmental challenges.
Economic Impact: Boosting entrepreneurship and employability through vital university-industry cooperation.
The project facilitates a strategic technology transfer from the European Union to Nigeria, aligning with global efforts to combat food crises and promote gender equality in agribusiness. By bridging the educational gap in smart agriculture, the consortium seeks to catalyze digital transformation and sustainable growth across the region.
The project is led by the University of Siegen (Germany) as the International Coordinator, with participation from:
Europe: Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences (Poland) and the University of Food Technology (Bulgaria).
Nigeria: Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Michael Okpara University of Agriculture (MOUAU), Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), and AlumUnite Limited.
The OAU team, dedicated to driving the success of this intervention, is led by Prof. S.O. Ajadi. Other prominent members include the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A.S. Bamire, alongside Prof. G.A. Aderounmu, Prof. S.A. Bello, Prof. M.L. Sanni, Dr. S.A. Muda, and Dr. R.A. Adetona.
