Okun Community Hosts Grand Send-Off for FUL Vice-Chancellor
The Okun Development Association (ODA) recently organized a distinguished send-off ceremony at the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) to honor the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi.
The event celebrated a visionary leader whose five-year tenure, which began in February 2021, has been widely characterized as a "renaissance" for the 15-year-old institution. Under his leadership, FUL achieved significant milestones, including:
Academic Expansion: The establishment of new faculties, including Engineering, Agriculture, and the College of Health Sciences.
Infrastructure & Energy: The completion of landmark projects such as the University Mini-Stadium, a 24-hour solar power project funded by the REA/AfDB, and the groundbreaking of the four-storey Senate Building.
National & Global Recognition: FUL secured a spot in the Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan African University Rankings and was recognized as the most ethically responsible federal establishment in Kogi State in 2025.
Speaking at the ceremony, stakeholders from the Okun community—representing the Yoruba-speaking areas of Kogi State—praised Professor Akinwumi as a "worthy ambassador" whose pragmatic leadership elevated the university's global visibility.
As Professor Akinwumi prepares to bow out in February 2026, he will be succeeded by Professor Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, who will be inaugurated as the 4th Substantive Vice-Chancellor on Monday, February 16, 2026.
