Ondo State High Court Blocks BEDC from Disconnecting Electricity at UNIMEDTH
An Ondo State High Court in Akure has blocked the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) from disconnecting electricity at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) in Ondo. The court's decision, made by Justice B J Akinwumi, also prohibits BEDC from tampering with the hospital's electrical cables.
An Ondo State High Court in Akure has issued a restraining order against the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), halting any disconnection of electricity at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) in Ondo. This decision comes amid concerns over alleged arrears owed by the state-owned hospital.
The court's order, granted by Justice B J Akinwumi, prevents BEDC from disconnecting the power supply or tampering with the electrical cables connected to the hospital. The ruling followed a suit filed by UNIMEDTH through its legal representative, Iyiola Afolabi. The hospital's management sought the injunction to prevent any disruption of its essential services due to the alleged debt.
In the suit, UNIMEDTH requested an "Order of interim injunction" to stop BEDC, along with its agents and representatives, from disconnecting or threatening to disconnect the electricity supply. This request was made under Order 20 Rule 1 (1) and (2), Rule 15 of the Ondo State High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules 2019, and the inherent jurisdiction of the court.
Justice Akinwumi's order follows a review of the affidavits supporting the motion. No date has been set for further hearings as the court is currently on vacation.
