Ophthalmologist Warns Against Using Urine to Study Eye Conditions

A consultant ophthalmologist, Dr. Festus Oshoba, has warned against the application of harmful substances, including human or cow urine, to treat eye redness and other conditions. According to Dr. Oshoba, such practices can lead to blindness.

Dr. Oshoba emphasized the need for proper medical care, discouraging self-help and self-medication. He stressed that the eyes are a vital part of the body, and any conditions should be treated with caution and under medical supervision.

The warning comes amid a shortage of ophthalmologists in Nigeria, with only about 500 certified ophthalmologists serving a population of over 200 million people. Efforts are being made to improve ophthalmology training and patient care, including the establishment of a Surgical Simulation Centre.
