The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared its commitment to addressing irregularities in the employment of university staff, emphasizing the need to restore proper procedures in the recruitment process. ASUU's National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osadeke, made this assertion during the Heroes’ Day Celebration at the University of Uyo in Akwa Ibom State.

Prof. Osadeke expressed concern over the politicization of university recruitment, accusing vice-chancellors of deviating from due process. He alleged that collaboration between traditional rulers, governors, and politicians had turned the employment of university staff into constituency projects.

The union president pledged ASUU's determination to rectify the prevailing misnomer, emphasizing the urgency of restoring sanity to the university system. He highlighted the absence of job advertisements by universities over the past six to ten years, despite a significant increase in staff numbers.

Prof. Osadeke criticized the current trend where vice-chancellors appoint individuals as lecturers through temporary appointments, emphasizing the negative impact on the academic environment. He stressed the need to reverse this misnomer and ensure that the recruitment process aligns with established norms.

In a separate development, 15 indigent students at the University of Uyo received a total of N1.7 million in academic excellence awards. The awards were part of the ASUU scholarship scheme aimed at encouraging outstanding students to complete their courses.

ASUU's acting chairman, Prof. Opeyemi Olajide, explained that the scholarships were designed to support brilliant students, fostering their academic pursuits in various faculties. One of the scholarship beneficiaries, Ekpo Friday from the Faculty of Education, expressed gratitude to ASUU for the generous gesture.
