Professor Bolanle Ojokoh Elected Fellow of African Academy of Sciences, Appointed to TWAS AI Task Force

Professor Bolanle Ojokoh of the Department of Information Systems, Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has been elected as a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS) and selected to serve on The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Task Force on Artificial Intelligence and Data Sciences for the Global South.

Professor Bolanle Ojokoh of the Department of Information Systems, Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has been elected as a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS) and selected to serve on The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Task Force on Artificial Intelligence and Data Sciences for the Global South.

In a formal notification, the Secretary General of the AAS Governing Council, Friday Okonofua, congratulated Professor Ojokoh on her successful election, confirming that she may now append ‘FAAS’ to her name and signature in recognition of this prestigious honour.

The TWAS task force will bring together leading global experts to address the widening artificial intelligence divide between the Global North and Global South. According to TWAS, the initiative aims to tackle barriers such as inadequate digital infrastructure, limited AI expertise, weak governance frameworks, and restricted access to high-quality data in developing countries. The task force is expected to leverage TWAS’s network of over 1,400 Fellows across 112 countries to ensure equitable distribution of AI benefits and strengthen South–South scientific collaboration.

Congratulating her achievement, FUTA Vice-Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji described the dual recognition as a testament to Professor Ojokoh’s intellectual prowess and contribution to the University. “Through these roles, Professor Ojokoh has demonstrated exceptional expertise in her field. She is one of our academics who continue to attract global recognition and elevate FUTA’s profile,” she stated.

Professor Ojokoh has held key academic and leadership positions, including Head of Department, Information Systems at FUTA, Adjunct Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, and Co-Chair of the TWAS Young Affiliates Network (TYAN, 2021–2023). She currently serves on the FUTA University Senate and leads the Automated Contact Tracing Research Group (ACTRG).

A member of multiple professional bodies, Professor Ojokoh has attracted research funding amounting to hundreds of millions of naira and holds a patent, further cementing her reputation as a leading academic and innovator in AI and data sciences.
