The J.F. Ade-Ajayi Auditorium at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) was the venue for an enlightening session on September 4, 2024, as Professor Habeeb Tijani, a renowned Surgical Urologist, delivered the 25th Inaugural Lecture for the 2023/2024 academic session. His lecture, titled “Man’s Reproductive System: Its Manufacturing Errors, Equipment Failure, and Failed Deliveries,” delved into male reproductive health, drawing on his extensive research and innovations in Urological Surgery.
During his meticulously crafted presentation, Professor Tijani explored critical issues in male reproductive health, including congenital abnormalities, surgical innovations, and reproductive system malfunctions. Highlighting his contributions to the field, he introduced groundbreaking surgical techniques, particularly in treating Hypospadias, a congenital defect in which the male genitalia is malformed. His novel approach to this condition, recognized in the Standard Textbook of Reconstructive Urology, has been lauded for eliminating post-surgical complications.
Professor Tijani compared the male reproductive system to a machine vulnerable to "manufacturing errors" and "operational failures." He addressed various issues, including accidents affecting the Phallus, such as Penile Fractures during intercourse, revealing through his research that 90% of these incidents in Sub-Saharan Africa occur due to reverse coitus positions.
Another area of focus was Priapism, a prolonged and often painful erection likened to a car engine that won’t shut off. He emphasized the urgency of early medical intervention, citing that delays can lead to permanent erectile dysfunction. He also tackled male infertility, identifying factors such as small testes and Varicoceles as common causes of low sperm count.
In her address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola commended Professor Tijani for his pioneering work, which has significantly advanced male reproductive health in Nigeria and beyond. The event attracted scholars, medical professionals, and dignitaries, further solidifying UNILAG's status as a hub for groundbreaking medical research.
Professor Tijani's contributions, including his novel surgical techniques, have been recognized globally, with citations in the European Urological Association Guidelines and other esteemed publications. His lecture not only highlighted key medical challenges but also provided innovative solutions, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of Urological Surgery.
