Redeemer's University Vice-Chancellor Celebrates Debate Society Following Major Intervarsity Victories

The Vice-Chancellor of Redeemer's University, Professor Shadrach Olufemi Akindele, has feted the winning members of the Redeemer's University Debate Society, stating that the entire university community is proud of their exploits in debate competitions both within and outside the institution.

The debaters, led by the outgoing president, Rachael Amaku, were received by the Vice-Chancellor in his office on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

Professor Akindele commended their outstanding performance in competitions and urged them to sustain the momentum, adding that the University would continue to provide all necessary support.

Members of the Redeemer's University Debate Society participated in at least three competitions, earning several prizes and awards.

At a debate competition hosted by Lead City University, Team Redeemer's University, comprising Kayode Samuel and Amadi Courage, emerged champions. They defeated teams from Lead City University, Atiba University, Lagos State University, and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology to secure first place.

Commenting on their victory in an interview, the winning duo said, “It was a very interesting and impactful experience, especially as it was our first time representing the school.

“We bonded with students from other universities, sharing experiences, rooms, laughter, and ultimately, our triumph in the competition.”

At another debate competition hosted by Fountain University, Redeemer's University, represented by Osisiogu Toluwalope, Usman Fatima Jikantoro, and Johnson Joy Esosa, finished as first runners-up.

They competed against teams from Lead City University, Fountain University, University of Ilorin, University of Ibadan, University of Osun, Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun (FUHSI), and Al-Hikmah University.

Furthermore, in May, the Redeemer's University Debate Society organised and hosted its maiden debate competition, tagged “Battle of Wits.”

Eight universities participated in the competition: Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), University of Ibadan (UI), University of Lagos (UNILAG), Landmark University, Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), Fountain University, and the host, Redeemer's University.

The tournament, which lasted three days, adopted the British Parliamentary (BP) debating format. Participants competed in three preliminary rounds before advancing to the final stage.

In the finals, Obafemi Awolowo University emerged as the winner, while Redeemer's University finished as first runner-up.

Beyond the competition, Battle of Wits served as a platform for collaboration and relationship-building among students from different institutions, fostering stronger ties and encouraging the exchange of ideas across campuses.
