The Management of Rivers State University (RSU), Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, has announced stricter measures to regulate vehicular movement within the campus following the tragic death of a campus resident, Miss Eno Udoson.

In a statement issued by the Acting Registrar, Dr. Idanyingi I. Daminabo, the university expressed deep sadness over the incident, which occurred on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, and extended its condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased.

According to the university, the fatal accident was caused by the reckless driving of two students, Darlington Kosi Onuaku of the Department of Development and Communication Studies and Obinna Daniel Ikechi of the Department of Computer Science. Both students have been arrested and handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The management stated that although measures such as speed limits, speed breakers and sanctions against reckless driving had already been introduced, the latest incident necessitated additional safety measures. It said a management meeting held on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, approved a new set of regulations aimed at preventing similar tragedies.

Under the new directives:

  • Undergraduate students are prohibited from driving private vehicles into the campus between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
  • Students who bring private vehicles to the university must park them at the designated car park near the main entrance and use authorised university shuttle buses for movement within the campus.
  • Postgraduate and Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) students will only be permitted to drive private vehicles into the campus upon presenting valid university identity cards.
  • Any student found driving recklessly on campus will face suspension, disciplinary action and the impoundment of the vehicle involved.
  • Visiting hours to student hostels will now end at 6:00 p.m. daily.

The university also reaffirmed its approved speed limits of 30 kilometres per hour on major campus roads and 20 kilometres per hour in residential areas, urging all members of the university community to comply with the regulations to ensure the safety of lives and property.
