The Edo State University Teaching Hospital (EBSUTH) has withdrawn a 400-level Medical and Surgery (MBBs) student after the candidate failed to pass the 2nd Professional examinations in Pathology and Pharmacology for the fifth time.
The announcement was shared by Alacrity, highlighting the emotional and systemic impact of such policies.
In the recently concluded exam, out of 141 students who sat, only 44 passed, 75 will resit, 22 are set to repeat the year, 3 were disqualified, and 1 withdrawn—representing a pass rate of just 31%.

Many have questioned whether withdrawal is the best option, arguing that the college system strictly enforces the maximum number of attempts, regardless of the student’s overall progress. Concerns have also been raised about the mental health of students, as repeated failures and strict withdrawal policies contribute to anxiety and depression.
Alacrity notes that while each professional exam is independent, the situation highlights the need for colleges to assess struggling students more carefully to determine underlying issues rather than immediately enforcing withdrawal.
Medical students are encouraged to stay resilient, as the system does not “send” students lightly, and support structures may exist to help navigate academic challenges.
