Salem University VC Prof Alewo Akubo Urges Federal Government to Support Private Universities

In a recent press briefing, the Vice Chancellor of Salem University, Lokoja, Professor Alewo Akubo, emphasized the critical role that private universities play in Nigeria's educational landscape. Speaking ahead of the university's 6th Convocation Ceremony, which will see 499 graduates across seven colleges, including 41 first-class students, he urged the Federal Government to extend the same support and funding to private universities as is given to public institutions.

Professor Akubo pointed out that for Nigeria to achieve sustainable educational growth, private universities need to be adequately funded, particularly through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). He stressed that private universities are crucial in shaping the future of Nigeria's education system, as they are often more affordable than public institutions and contribute significantly to the country's development.

“The future of education in Nigeria lies mostly with the private universities which hold the future,” Professor Akubo said. “Public universities are more expensive than private universities. Therefore, the Federal Government should ensure that private universities are supported financially and strategically.”

He also announced that the university would hold a convocation lecture on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, to be delivered by Professor Sam Egwu, a distinguished Professor of Political Economy. The convocation will include graduates from both the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic sessions.
