SAZU law faculty earns Shari'ah Court Khadi's praise at landmark moot court competition

The Faculty of Law, Sa’adu Zungur University, SAZU, Bauchi State, has reaffirmed its reputation for academic excellence following an impressive demonstration of practical legal skills by students at a simulated Client Interview and Grand Moot Court Competition.

The event was organized by Pioneers Chambers in honor of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Fatima Tahir, on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at the Campus Auditorium. It was designed to bridge the gap between legal theory and courtroom practice.

Speaking as special guest, Honorable Khadi Muhuyiddeen Muhammad of the Bauchi State Shari'ah Court of Appeal described the Faculty as a flourishing pillar of the university’s academic growth.

He expressed satisfaction with the students’ enthusiasm, discipline, and realism in replicating court proceedings.  

"The students presented an activity strikingly similar to real-life courtroom proceedings. This is a promising start for both the Faculty and the University at large," he said.

Khadi Muhuyiddeen also congratulated Professor Fatima Tahir on the developmental strides she has continued to record for the University, noting that her leadership has given the institution an edge among its peers. He described her as a beacon of academic excellence whose stewardship continues to bring pride to the state and the nation.

The competition was presided over by Justice Abdussalam Idris Waziri, High Court Judge of Bauchi State.

Two student counsel teams demonstrated strong advocacy skills while arguing a complex case centered on dishonesty and breach of a business agreement. Delivering judgment in favor of the Claimant Counsel, Justice Waziri affirmed that justice was duly served according to law.

Staff Adviser of Pioneers Chambers, Barrister Rilwan A. Jibril, expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor for her support of the Faculty, which he described as a major boost to the progress of its activities.

He said the purpose of the Moot Court Competition is to give students first-hand experience of courtroom practice and other legal procedures.  

"This initiative equips students with practical knowledge of courtroom experience. I urge other student bodies to emulate such practical projects," he stated.

The Dean, Faculty of Law, Prof. S.M.G. Kanam, Esq., also appreciated the Vice-Chancellor, describing programs like the moot court as evidence of her administration’s commitment to academic excellence.

He added that the Faculty of Law remains an essential pillar in the University’s mission of producing quality graduates. He noted that the Moot Court, alongside recently introduced initiatives such as the Law Clinic and Law Chambers, serves the dual purpose of advancing student knowledge and giving back to the host community.

In her address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Fatima Tahir, commended the students for their discipline and courage. She urged the aspiring lawyers to make righteousness and the fear of God their guiding principles.

To encourage academic rivalry and excellence, Prof. Tahir presented a monetary reward to the winning counsel team. She also recommended that future editions invite students from other faculties to inspire campus-wide academic drive.
