Smooth Execution of 2024_2 Science Practical in South-East Earns Praise from NOUN Officials
The ongoing 2024_2 Science Practical exercise in the South-east region has been commended for its smooth conduct and effective administration by senior faculty members of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
The ongoing 2024_2 Science Practical exercise in the South-east region has been commended for its smooth conduct and effective administration by senior faculty members of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). The commendation came from Prof. Ugochukwu Osisiogu, a lecturer in the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Sciences, during an interview with NOUN News while monitoring the exercise in Enugu State.
Prof. Osisiogu applauded the university’s management for its innovative approach in organizing the mathematics practical, which she described as groundbreaking. "NOUN has once again proven to be a pacesetter in education, demonstrating foresight that will serve as a model for other institutions," she stated. According to her, the students participating in the exercise are drawn from various study centres across the South-east zone, reflecting the university’s commitment to hands-on learning.
Speaking on the benefits of the science practical to students, Prof. Osisiogu emphasized the role of practical exercises in enhancing cognitive development, memory, attention, and reasoning abilities. She noted that these skills positively impact students’ academic performance across multiple subjects, especially in mathematics. "This practical exercise is crucial in showcasing the real-world applications of mathematical principles. It brings a sense of purpose to learning, making it more engaging and meaningful for students," she added.
In an era dominated by technology, Prof. Osisiogu highlighted the critical link between mathematical skills and technological proficiency. "Whether it’s coding, data analysis, or algorithms, students who excel in mathematics are better equipped to navigate the digital landscape," she explained, underscoring the relevance of mathematics in today’s tech-driven world.
Dr. Maureen Nkedilim Chukwu, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Sciences, who also monitored the practical exercise in the region, echoed similar sentiments. She noted that the hands-on experience provided through the science practical is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the subject. "A B.Sc. programme in science is incomplete without practical exercises. All students must pass this component to graduate," Dr. Chukwu emphasized.
Dr. Chukwu further explained that the knowledge gained from these practical exercises prepares students for real-world applications in various sectors, including academic institutions, factories, and companies that require their expertise after graduation. "This exercise equips our students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring that they can compete on an equal footing with their peers from conventional universities," she concluded.
The 2024_2 Science Practical in the South-east region continues to receive positive feedback from both faculty and students, highlighting NOUN's commitment to delivering high-quality education through innovative and practical learning experiences.
