Governments at all levels have been called upon to implement comprehensive programmes to equip nurses with essential skills to address evolving public and community health challenges.
Prof. Olaide Bamidele Edet, the 131st inaugural lecturer of the University of Calabar, made this appeal while delivering her lecture titled “Bridging the River: Currents of Public-Community Health Nursing on the Tides of Scholarliness” at the institution's International Conference Centre.
She emphasized the importance of investing in nursing education and creating policies to strengthen the workforce, ensuring nurses can meet diverse healthcare demands and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Prof. Edet decried the global shortage of six million nurses, particularly affecting low- and middle-income countries, and called for equitable recruitment, retention, and distribution of nursing professionals. She also highlighted the need for supportive work environments, digital health integration, and nurses' active involvement in health policy formulation.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Angela Oyo-Ita, praised Prof. Edet for her impactful lecture and underscored the critical role nurses play in healthcare.
The event concluded with a presentation of a memento to the inaugural lecturer.
