The Sokoto State High Court has granted bail to Dr. Abubakar Alkali, a Senior Lecturer in Petroleum and Gas Engineering at Baze University. Alkali had been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) for the past three weeks on allegations of supporting the #EndBadGovernance protests.

According to sources, Alkali was granted bail on Thursday following intervention from various legal bodies, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and its Citizens’ Liberties Committee. The Sokoto NBA branch also played a crucial role in the case.

Alkali’s detention had attracted significant attention, with his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, raising concerns about his client’s imprisonment on social media. Adeyanju alleged that Alkali was abducted by the DSS and held in Sokoto for his involvement in the protests advocating against government inefficiency.

The court's decision to grant bail comes after considerable advocacy and legal support from civil rights organizations and legal professionals.
