Moving towards enhancing the quality of education, Anambra State in Nigeria has set a new standard for teacher recruitment under the leadership of Professor C. C Soludo. The National Policy on Education (2004) asserts that the quality of education cannot surpass the competence of its educators, and this belief has fueled Anambra's commitment to fostering a robust teaching force.

Historically, teacher recruitment in the state was often marred by favoritism, nepotism, and a lack of meritocracy. However, the winds of change blew in March 2022 when Prof. Soludo, a former governor of the Central Bank and a distinguished professor of Economics, assumed office. He swiftly implemented reforms, reinstating due process, integrity, and meritocracy in the bureaucratic machinery of the government.

Within six months of assuming office, Prof. Soludo launched a recruitment drive for 5000 teachers, drawing over 40,000 applicants in 2022. The process, resembling those in technologically advanced nations, included comprehensive stages such as identification, attraction, screening, shortlisting, interviewing, selection, hiring, and onboarding. Candidates faced Computer-Based Testing (CBT) examinations at each stage, ensuring that only the best minds progressed.

The success of the initial recruitment phase prompted the government to continue the momentum. In September 2023, a new recruitment cycle began after the introduction of free primary and secondary education in Anambra State. The ongoing 2023/2024 recruitment drive, managed by the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) and Post-Primary School Service Commission (PPSSC), has already garnered over 30,000 applicants for both primary and secondary school positions.

A distinguishing factor in the selection process is the emphasis on academic qualifications, with a preference for candidates possessing B. ED, BSC, B.A (ED), and NCE in Sciences and Languages. Additionally, the Anambra State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) prioritizes candidates with Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), HND, and a Teaching Regulatory Council of Nigeria (TRCN) certification.

Prof. Soludo's commitment to education goes beyond recruitment numbers; he aims to deploy a minimum of 3000 additional teachers exclusively to public schools. This strategic move aligns with his vision to revitalize public education, ensuring quality teaching and learning experiences for students.

The quality of teachers is central to shaping the educational landscape. Anambra's innovative recruitment approach reflects a commitment to providing accessible, quality education as a foundation for the future. Prof. Soludo's administration recognizes that highly qualified teachers not only contribute to a richer learning environment but also play a pivotal role in shaping students' overall development by imparting values, ethics, and essential life skills. The ongoing recruitment process underscores Anambra State's dedication to maintaining a dynamic and effective education system that adapts to evolving methods and technologies.
