JUST IN: SSANU and NASU Declare Indefinite Strike at UNIPORT

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) faces imminent disruptions as the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) announced an indefinite strike set to begin at midnight on Sunday, October 27, 2024.

In an official notice addressed to the university’s Vice Chancellor, SSANU’s UNIPORT branch chairman, Comrade Bernard-Eze Chukwu, and Branch Secretary, Comrade Ezebaraba Michael C., stated:

“We write on the directive of the National Leadership of JAC of SSANU and NASU to inform you that we shall proceed on an indefinite strike commencing from midnight of Sunday, 27th October, 2024 barring any last-minute change. In line with the above directive, our members will stay off their places of work and no non-SSANU or NASU member will be allowed to do their jobs.”

The directive indicates a full withdrawal of services by SSANU and NASU members, along with restrictions on non-union members performing essential duties. This move is expected to disrupt administrative operations, maintenance, and security, affecting students, staff, and overall university functions.

The unions have not disclosed specific demands but cited ongoing unresolved issues as the reason for the strike action. UNIPORT officials and stakeholders are urged to anticipate and prepare for possible disruptions, while many hope for a swift resolution to mitigate academic and operational impacts on the university community.
