SUN School of Basic Medical Sciences conducts medical outreach on menstrual hygiene

The School of Basic Medical Sciences (SBMS) at Skyline University Nigeria (SUN) has conducted a medical outreach on menstrual hygiene in Kano State

The outreach, as part of the university’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), was conducted on Saturday, May 18th, 2024, at Kofar Na’isa Primary Health Care under Kano Municipal Local Government Area L.G.A.

The medical outreach was delivered by students of Physiotherapy and Nursing students at SUN under the leadership of Mr. Trimisiyu Lawal, a lecturer at the Department of Management and Mr. Abdulsalam Mustapha, a lecturer at the Department of Microbiology.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Lawal said the essence of the outreach is to encourage the students to support women in Kano communities and emphasize the importance of women’s health. He said that through the session, they will better understand how they will be working with community members in the future.

Ms. Fatima Musa Aliyu, a registered nurse from the Department of Nursing at Bayero University Kano (BUK), said in her remarks that menstrual hygiene is an important aspect of women’s reproductive health. She reiterated that menstrual hygiene is proven to be effective in protecting women from contracting infections that might have short or long-term effects.

Ms. Aliyu, in her earlier visit to SUN, where she delivered a lecture on ‘Menstrual Hygiene Management’, explained that women can support the fight against climate change by adopting sustainable fabrics and materials for menstrual hygiene.

SUN students took turns highlighting different aspects of menstrual hygiene management to the community women that were present for the outreach program. They then distributed pads and other sanitary items to the women.
