Taraba State University Students Union Government Issues Update on Ongoing ASUU Strike
The Students Union Government (SUG) of Taraba State University has released a press statement addressing the current state of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike.
The union expressed appreciation for the State Government's efforts to address some of ASUU's demands, including the implementation of the minimum wage, constitution of the governing council, and payment of part of the earned academic allowance.
However, the SUG urged the government to do more to resolve outstanding issues, particularly the pension scheme. The union called on ASUU to consider the plight of students, who are facing hardships due to the prolonged strike, including expired house rents and potential disruption of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) participation.
The SUG emphasized its commitment to engaging with stakeholders, including ASUU, the State Government, and university management, to find a solution to the crisis. The union reassured students that it will continue to work tirelessly to restore the academic calendar and prevent further disruption to education.
The ASUU strike has been ongoing, with the union citing unmet demands by the Taraba government as the reason for the strike action.¹ The strike has disrupted examinations and final-year academic activities, prompting concerns from students and the university community.
