Tragedy at UNIBEN: Student Killed, Two Others Injured in Shooting Incident
A UNIBEN student identified as Junior was shot dead by masked gunmen near the university’s main gate in Ugbowo shortly after finishing an exam. He was driving with two passengers when the attackers opened fire on their vehicle, killing him and injuring the others, who were rushed to the hospital. The assailants reportedly arrived in an unmarked vehicle and used AK-47 rifles, though the motive for the attack is still unclear. Police have not yet issued an official statement. The incident comes amid rising security concerns on campus following another violent confrontation involving students the previous day.
A student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), identified simply as Junior, was on Sunday shot dead by masked gunmen near the main campus gate in Ugbowo, Edo State. The incident, which occurred shortly after he had finished writing an examination, has left the university community in shock.
According to reports, Junior had just completed an exam in the Political Science Department about an hour before the fatal attack. He was said to be driving out of the campus in a Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV with two passengers—one male and one female—when the gunmen struck.
Witnesses stated that the attackers arrived in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle without a number plate and were armed with AK-47 rifles. They were also reportedly masked, making immediate identification difficult. It remains unclear whether the attack is linked to cult-related violence or other motives.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that as the gunmen approached, Junior attempted to escape by reversing his vehicle. In the process, he reportedly collided with another car behind him, becoming trapped between vehicles and unable to flee.
The attackers are said to have concentrated their gunfire on the driver’s side of the vehicle. Junior sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was confirmed dead at the scene. The two other occupants of the car were also hit—one in the stomach and the other in the back—and were quickly rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Junior, reportedly from Ubaja, was described by acquaintances as humble, respectful, and gentle, with no known involvement in cult activities.

Operatives from the Ugbowo Divisional Police Headquarters were deployed to the scene, where they evacuated the victim’s body and began preliminary investigations. However, the Edo State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
In a separate but related incident on Saturday, footage emerged showing another UNIBEN student being chased with a machete during a confrontation at the Social Science Lecture Theatre. The student, who reportedly defended himself by throwing stones at his attackers, managed to escape unharmed. The back-to-back violent incidents have raised renewed concerns about safety around the university environment and the growing fear among students in the institution
